Jesse had another thyroid test on 17th December. The T4 came back as being sky high now. So Mark has advised me to half the Soloxine dose, which I am doing now. His coat seemed to go drier though and I am not sure whether this is the right dosage; however, the T4 really are very high (133 compared to the 15 - 40 normal range).
I have contacted Jean Dodds with the results to see what the American Cocker Spaniel normal range should be and to see what her interpretation of it all is. I will then let Mark know as soon as she gets back to me.
In the meantime I will give Jesse the lower dosage as recommended and will keep track of things.

2 YEARS OLD
I can't believe how quickly time went by, but yesterday, Jesse already had his second birthday... he is properly grown up now.
Unfortunately my proper camera has given up the ghost, so I had to use the small camera today, hence the less than ideal picture quality, but nonetheless... They have come up as a lovely memory of Jesse's 2nd birthday!

Upset tummy
On Wednesday night, Jesse brought his dinner up again virtually undigested and he also threw up some unidentified mess too... Yesterday morning I gave him a small amount of food which he ate, but he threw it up again. In the evening, he didn't even want to eat. He was a bit less energetic, but not lethargic or anything, so it certainly wasn't a veterinary emergency.
This morning now, he threw up some bile again, but I still offered half a meal, which he ate very enthusiastically! Time will tell whether it'll come back up again too... I will leave early today from work so I can see how he is and if he throws up again, take him to the vet.

Update... a bit more itching again
Over the last week or so, Jesse has started itching quite a lot again, though I can't see any skin changes. I have now stopped the Salmon Oil and the Nut Oil too as I think he may be reacting to that. Time will tell.
I have booked him in for Tuesday, 16th November, to have his thyroid levels checked to see whether the dosage is fine.
Jesse has not had any aggressive incidents, virtually no resource guarding against our dogs (a couple of growls when toys taken straight out of his mouth which is fair enough), no problems on walks unless the lurchers kicked off (so Jesse has to join in of course...).
His coat is not much improved yet, but I guess with so much coat, it will take a good few months for the new hair to come through. But he still has no dandruff and he doesn't smell.

The week-end... the good (great) and the bad
On Saturday, we had Cornel's 50th Birthday Party! It was a test for Jesse as when we had guests previously, he was very nervous and unsociable. On Saturday evening however, he was brilliant. Apart from a couple of growls at the young girl there, he was fine and very sociable. He went to greet everyone, certainly wasn't glued to me, but moved freely and really enjoyed himself. He also tried to play with Snowy who my parents-in-law brought along, but Snowy doesn't understand how to play with dogs...
All four dogs have been absolutely brilliant on Saturday. They behaved well and had a grand time getting all the attention from all the guests! I am so proud of our four boys.
On Sunday, Jesse and I went to an obedience workshop with Kay Raven. It was very good and I got a few good tips from her. She uses a lot more luring and time-out for "punishment" for wrong responses whereas I use much more freeshaping and no punishment other than no reward. But it was a good day and it was very interesting to watch everyone and pick up some new ideas.
Unfortunately Jesse wasn't so comfortable around the other dogs and he did have a go at little Archie (7-week old puppy), but I cought him in time, so Archie didn't get hurt. But this is still an area that is obviously (so far) not affected at all by the thyroxine, so needs lots more work! But he is not coming to training class in the winter anyway, so there is no problem. He is absolutely fine on walks and in fact appears a lot happier with other dogs and has tried to play with some as well!

Two weeks on Soloxine
Jesse has now been on Soloxine for two weeks! And touch wood, so far I have not seen a any resource guarding at all from him with our other dogs... something which used to be very common place before! (with the exception when we took him to my parents-in-law where he met their new dog for the first time and he went a little stiff when he had a ball and the other dog approached, but perfectly within reason).
He has not been aggressing other dogs on lead last week either, though he hasn't been to training class lately (where this was worst), so I can't judge this one just yet. I am aware that with most aggression issues, there will also be a learnt component to it all now, so additional work will probably be necessary. He seems to be more playful with some dogs we meet on walks, which is great of course.
He does not have any dandruff anymore, the coat seems a bit softer and shinier already... though the latter may just be wishful thinking as that certainly will take a bit longer to return to normal. I am certainly pulling out a lot less hair when I brush him though, less mats too.

Visiting parents-in-law with Snowy
Today, I decided to take Jesse with me when we went to see parents-in-law. I was confident enough to do it now since Jesse has not shown any aggressive behaviour at all since being on thyroxine.
It went very well. There were a couple of grumbles at the beginning, but nothing too serious. They were soon playing and getting on fine. I was also very pleased to see that Jesse was fine with Snowy even when food was around. He did stiffen up when he had a ball and Snowy got close, so I just took the toys away... That was fine though, nothing I would worry about.
Since being on thyroxine, Jesse has not been resource guarding at all and I am over the moon. We have also passed a couple of kids and Jesse took no notice at all, the same with a person that had a trolly...
His itching is also getting less, which I am really glad about. I nearly called the vet for a steroid injection, but of course, that would alter the test results so it would have been a problem as Jesse needs his first follow-up blood test just before Christmas!

Resource guarding
Wow, I was left speechless this morning when Flash walked up to Jesse's food bowl WHILST JESSE WAS STILL EATING and hoovered up the spilled food around it! Just a few days ago, Jesse would have taken his head off for this, or rather, Flash would never even have got as near as that as he used to stiffen up when a dog even just looked like he was going to come near the bowl...
Jesse is also hogging the fire a lot less already, in fact, he went and laid down behind Cornel's chair yesterday because it got too warm in the front part of the room...
Looks like the hormone replacement therapy really is working.

Effects so far
Jesse has now been on Soloxine for a week. There have already been some effects, though of course the major stuff should happen over the next few weeks/months.
Drooping eyes: Jacqui and I both think that his eyes are less droopy. Jacqui also says that when she did TTouch, his skin around his head (and all over) felt a lot better and was totally loose and relaxed.
Aggression: touch wood, we have not had any aggressive incidents, but that may not be related to the thyroid as he has not had any episodes since those September ones. He does seem a bit less guardy around his food though and the dogs have been able to walk past him without stiffening of body or grumbling... Time will tell though.

Last lot of results
I talked to Mark again yesterday and the last lot of results has come back too... there are T3 antibodies too.
So from today Jesse is starting on Soloxine (0.5 mg). I will monitor his progress very carefully. I so hope that it is going to work for him.
And here are some pictures I took on Sunday; I thought it might give me something to compare his physical appearance after so many weeks of treatment... and of course, they are just beautiful pictures too.

Jesse's reading by Marie
Initially wanted to start with reading Troy next... then found an insistent calling towards Jesse. Realised as I began that Troy has to be the last that I read.... almost as though he is slightly separate from the others in some way... obviously not in the way he is cared for or anything, just that he does different things... has a different family role that set him apart. I am told firmly that he is your husband's dog.... (sorry I know he's yours too)
So.... Jesse... an 'american' cocker spaniel... and I find the word 'american' emphasised in my mind as though it is the answer to a question. Jesse thinks very well of himself. He has status... always has done.. seeing an image from the past of him being 'protected' from another dog barking at him.. ;... as he is 'bustled' out of reach of the situation it is as if he is saying...'No..no ..let me explain....hear me out. I'm very important you see. I'm the... ooh struggling for a word here... something like..owner's or boss's or leader's dog. He looks at the others in your pack and recognises that they too are of the same 'pack' as he and so no issues there.... That approach to others tho... as if he is constantly saying 'No' to them. A sharp no. He often wants others to behave in a certain way.See's his as the 'first family' and expects others to behave as such. Would accept a bowed submission as ideal. There's an issue around playfulness in others as though it has unsettled him... put him on edge. Image of an on leash dog close to your legs and then another further away bouncing.... it is a tense situation.
Flashing image of plain white fish broken into pieces. And a feeling of discomfort in bottom of chest/top of abdomen.... heavy meals don't sit well with him... almost as tho he gets indigestion after them not greatly tho just like us saying... 'oops ate too much there'... he knows this feeling and doesnt like it so is sensible. I'm reminded that a too full tummy makes it difficult to curl nose to tail...'not quite as comfortable'

For some strange reason I see a glowing circle around his bits.... as if there have been issues relating to this.
Jesse does obedience. He had a natural affinity for this when v young. A trick that he doesn't like doing.. finds it a bit embarrasing .... Jesse has an excellent sense of smell and uses this to great effect in his life. Not only can he 'find' he can also smell out emotions in others... he can smell fear at 50 paces! I get an image of Jesse with humour showing a situation where he surprises a bigger dog by being able to 'smell out' his insecurities leading to a surprise reaction. As tho the bigger gog expected Jesse to be scared and he wasn't cos he could smell out where the bigger dog was coming from. ie nervousness diguised as bravery.
Feeling on the whole that Jesse is a 'valiant' little guy. Often misunderstood by those who don't know him. He ctually is very big hearted and just wants the wold to run the way he knows it should be.
Strange but I always end a reading with trying to listen for a piece of music that would suit the dog I'm reading for... I have absolutely no idea why but Jesse gets 'Pat-a-cake'!!

It is actually very interesting to read! It's hard to give comments on the individual sections, but here's a few overall ones:
Troy is a bit apart and is supposed to be my husband's dog... and I think he would like it to be as well. However, my husband hasn't been taking care of him for the last three years or so, thinking that one or two walks a week or even no walk for a couple of weeks is sufficient... So I have taken care over for Troy mostly, hence probably Troy's pointing out that he is hubby's dog! I think Troy feels quite sad about that. Troy is also our top dog and has therefore always been a little on a different level... In addition, he is getting older and is not so interested anymore in interacting with the others too much! He loves his peace and quiet now.
Jesse is a funny boy and many things that you say are true... He has food allergies and when on commercial pet foods, he used to get upset tummies. I think he is fine now though in that respect. However, he has just been diagnosed hypothyroid which I think would account for a lot of his emotions! He is indeed quite careful around other dogs and rarely plays with them, though he is not aggressive off lead at all because he has space. On lead he can be very aggressive... This is possibly down to his thyroid issue! Both his half-brother and sister are extremely aggressive towards other dogs... As mentioned Jesse isn't, though he doesn't related to most too well... before he was neutered he wanted to hump them all, now he just says hello sort of cautiously and goes his own way...
There's an issue around playfulness in others as though it has unsettled him... put him on edge.
From very young even within his litter, he used to barge in trying to separate his litter mates if their playing went over the top or they were aggressive. He has always had an issue with that and used to go completely biserk as a pup when our other dogs started playing together! We gradually resolved this issue by teaching him to grab a toy instead to take it out on that instead! It is working.

Jesse is our baby, being the youngest (and the smallest); I still call him "puppy" eventhough he is almost 2 now. He is like a shadow to me, I move, he moves... he often falls asleep in my lap like a baby! Also, (unfortunately), my husband treats him totally different to all the others, Jesse can get away with murder and stuff is tolerated by him which he would not tolerate from the others! Although Jesse is my baby too, he is overall treated no different to the others by me.
Jesse is a happy little dog, but as you have picked up, he does have a strange relationship with his environment at times... I am thinking (and hoping) that this is largely down to the thyroid issue! I know from my friend who is also hypothyroid that this can run havoc with emotions.

Further result
I talked to Mark yesterday and we have received the third result, which is T3. This is normal. We are now waiting for one more result and that's the T3 antibodies.
Mark might still talk to Jean Dodds, however, the T4 and antibodies are so clear, I am not sure it is necessary. It might still be interesting to hear though what her opinion is.
We should have the last result on Monday when I will talk to Mark again. I haven't got the tablets yet either as they are not ready... will sort them out on Monday as well when Mark is back in the surgery.

Jesse is hypo-thyroid
Mark called today as the first part of the results are back! It turns out that Jesse is indeed hypo-thyroid... I will talk to Mark again on Thursday, and then take Jesse in on Friday to pick up his medication!
T4 is really low (15.4... right at the bottom of the normal range... as Jesse is young it should be in the higher half which would be around 25 to 40). The T4 antibodies are really high.
It looks at the moment that Jesse has autoimmune thyroiditis...

Thyroid Test
This morning, I took Jesse and Troy to see Mark yet again.
Although Jesse's skin has cleared up, he is still itching quite badly. To relief the symptoms immediately, Mark gave him a steroid shot just for the short term. At the same time, we took some blood (which Jesse was not impressed with at all...) for a thyroid test. We are getting a comprehensive test done here in the UK and then Mark will get in touch with Jean Dodds in the States to get her interpretation (based on breed, age, activity level etc) to give us an answer.
If of course Jesse is hypo-thyroid, then simple medication should do the trick. If he is not, then at least I can put that to one side and concentrate on another path to solve the issue (e.g. homeopathy).

Although Jesse's skin has cleared up, he is still itching quite badly. To relief the symptoms immediately, Mark gave him a steroid shot just for the short term. At the same time, we took some blood (which Jesse was not impressed with at all...) for a thyroid test. We are getting a comprehensive test done here in the UK and then Mark will get in touch with Jean Dodds in the States to get her interpretation (based on breed, age, activity level etc) to give us an answer.
If of course Jesse is hypo-thyroid, then simple medication should do the trick. If he is not, then at least I can put that to one side and concentrate on another path to solve the issue (e.g. homeopathy).

Another trip to the vet...
Well, Thursday was another trip to the vet as it was two weeks since the antibiotics injection. Jesse's skin has cleared up nicely, though he has started itching again after the week-end. Mark has given him another antibiotics injection and also a shampoo, as he said that his skin and coat are very dry. Mark wasn't too pleased I don't think when I told him that Jesse gets a bath every one or two weeks... But unfortunately there is no other option if I want to keep him in a long coat! I don't think either that the bathing has anything to do with the dry skin and coat... But I will use the shampoo that Mark gave me and then I will use an oatmeal shampoo which is supposed to be good for skin and coat.

First Novice Round - Thurrock Obedience Show
The weather was absolutely atrocious... it was raining almost non-stop and it was very windy! Neither Jesse nor I enjoyed it at all.
We did the Beginners first as we had running order 4. Jesse's heelwork was nice, but he anticipated both the recall and the retrieve! What a shame, he would have done well otherwise. I think I must have walked off with the wrong foot, as he didn't anticipate anything in Novice.
When Jesse did the Novice stays ok despite the rain(first time with my back towards him which I have never practiced), we did the round. Unfortunately his heelwork was a bit dodgy as - as the judge told me - I kept looking back! Stupid me! I still do it eventhough I get corrected all the time! I must do something about this.
Both judges loved Jesse's attitude and the Novice judge said that he was the happiest dog in the ring they had had so far. That's quite good enough for me! As long as Jesse is enjoying himself, that's fine with me.
Well, no rosettes today, but we have all winter to practice now and should be ready for next summer! Can't wait.

Jesse and Flash attacked on walk home
Last night, Patricia did not come to training, so it was just Jesse, Flash and me. Because of that, I decided to walk home along Portland Road and not through the green.
As we were walking along Portland Road, suddenly a staffie appeared out of a driveway and went straight for Jesse. I tried to get the dog off, but couldn't gain control because I had to hold on to the two leads to prevent Flash and Jesse from running out into the busy road. I tried everything to get Jesse away from the dog and Flash tried to get away too. Flash eventually slipped the harness and ran out into the road, but because Jesse was still being attacked and trying to get away too, I couldn't go after him and just called him. By then, the dog went after him and chased him around in the road... Cars had to break and stop to avoid an accident.
I eventually managed to pick up Jesse when I couldn't get hold of the other dog. Flash tried to come back to me a couple of times, but every time the dog chased him back into the road. I was terrified that Flash might get hit or would bolt... luckily he didn't and kept coming back onto the pavement.
After what seemed an eternity of chaos and me trying to get control of the situation without success, a door opened and some people came out and called the dog. By then Flash was back on the drive way, the dog came after him again and Flash finally turned around and growled at him, with that the dog went straight indoors.
They told me that their fence had a gap that was to be mended the next day... I told them that their dog went for mine and that they both ended up on the road with cars having to stop because of it. She appologised and asked whether my dogs were allright, which they were - at least physically. Perhaps Jesse's long coat saved him, I don't know.
I was shaking and crying on the way home, it was terrifying! I am still really tense inside because of it becaue of what could have happend. Flash could so easily have got hurt on that road or worse, killed; and I am so glad that he was confident enough to stay near me and not bolt! He was however worried on the way home too and walked with his tail tucked under.

Food guarding
Jesse has gone for Troy twice over the last few days, both times over food, yesterday though after Jesse had finished his treat... I was luckily there both times and stopped Jesse. Troy of course doesn't just walk away but has a go back. He would never hurt Jesse intentionally, but when Jesse attacks, he doesn't stop until I physically pull him out!
This is the fourth time in a month that he has gone for the other dogs! And he is starting to push his luck with Troy I think! It is definitely Jesse having a go first as Troy always stops immediately when I pull Jesse off.
I will talk to Mark about thyroid testing next Thursday when I see him.

Jesse at vets
I took Jesse to see Mark again today as his skin is pretty bad again.
Mark looked at him and found that his sores are different this time as there were mainly puss filled spots. He therefore suggested that we do a new course of antibiotics as he didn't feel it was the same problem as before.
I agree with him. So Jesse got an antibiotics injection that lasts 2 weeks... fab, no tablets! Jesse already seems a lot less itchy, though I am not sure whether this is just coincidence as it is surely not supposed to act as quickly as that.
I hope this clears things up once and for all.

Skins sores are back
Over the last couple of weeks, Jesse has started scratching more and more again, and now, the skin sores are back. I am making an appointment with the vets for tomorrow or early next week to discuss our next steps with Paul. I think I am also going to ask for a thyroid test, the allergies, skin problems together with the aggression issues (losing his temper) make me think that thyroid might be an issue.

Jesse lost his temper...
This morning, I had to really tell Jesse off as he completely lost it...
Jesse and Flash were playing whilst I was getting their breakfast ready. As sometimes happens, Flash must have caught him too hard somewhere and Jesse turned round and told him off... only this time, it wasn't just his normal squeaky telling off, then leave it at that. Jesse didn't stop, Flash was cornered against the axolotls tank and just started turning really defensive and serious... It wasn't Flash's fault at all, he had no choice as he couldn't get away from Jesse and Jesse had lost the plot.
I grabbed Jesse by the scruff, hauled him onto the sofa and told him off (verbally, not physically other than just holding on to him). Jesse stopped immediately then and was all appologetic (not submissive, just appologetic) to me as well as Flash... though Flash didn't want to know, poor thing.
This is the first time in a long time that Jesse has lost his temper again. I think it was because Flash accidently got cornered and couldn't get away... I am now even more seriously thinking about having Jesse's thyroid tested. Together with the skin issues (which aren't bad at all at the moment), the aggression may well be an indicator to a problem there! He has however been itching a bit more again over the last couple of days, which would also have contributed to his lack of self-control!

In training last night, Jesse did well (though heelwork could have been tighter). He actually didn't have a go at anyone and was focused on me ALL THE TIME! What a little star.
I am quite frustrated today regarding the training last night as I was critized about a lot of things (with the very best intentions mind, so I don't blame anyone). Up to now I was always told that doing it my way will not achieve good results in the ring. Now that I have won out of Pre-Beginners and am doing well in Beginners, I was told that what I do may be ok in Pre-Beginners or Beginners, but it won't be good enough in higher classes... Whatever I do doesn't seem to be able to change some people's opinion about my training method (clicker training). I will be just fine in higher classes of course as clicker training works differently and most traditional trainers don't understand how the results come about! So in many exercises it looks like I am letting my dog get away with slack/incorrect execution of exercises, when I am in fact simply shaping something (so what they see isn't the final result yet) or dropping a criteria whilst raising another (e.g. it was the very first time yesterday that I used a cloth in scent which wasn't mine... Jesse found it, I praised him as I needed to let him know as it was the first time, but I then got told not to praise him until he is back with it... Which obviously would teach Jesse nothing as he needed to know that the cloth he found was the right one, never mind about bringing it back or anything, that comes in again once he gets the hang of the first part).
Well, it's one of these things and I will just soldier on my way, as it works. The next and last show this year will be Thurrock in October... We have got 4 weeks to practice till then and hopefully get good results in both Beginners and - for the first time ever - Novice too.

Judge's report and Home cooking
JUDGE'S REPORT
Here is the judge's report of Jesse's 6th place in Beginners at St. Edwards... Gill Brett was the judge... I found it quite difficult working under Gill as she is obviously a training colleague, but her judging was very fair and it is true that Jesse - or rather I - have worked a lot better in the past! Nevertheless, we are happy with the result as this was only Jesse's fifth show:
6th losing 7 points was Vera and Jessie. This American Cocker I think is the only one working on the obedience circuit in the south. I have seen Jessie work better than this and I feel fewer marks would of been lost had Vera worked at a smarter pace. Nevertheless this was a great achievement for this pair as they have only entered a few shows this year. Well done.
HOME COOKING
I have finally switched Jesse to home cooking! I got fed up with the plastic in the Nature's Harvest food, a new batch I got was dark in colour again and Jesse didn't like eating it and I can't get it delivered properly either as the courier suddenly won't leave it at the neighbours anymore.
So this morning, Jesse got his very first home cooked meal. I mixed rice, white fish and carrots and added some salmon oil in the morning. Jesse loved it and his first poo this evening was fine without mucous and not soft like this morning...
We'll see how it goes, but I think this is it now, we will stick with this!

St. Edwards: 4th in Beginners
Jesse and I went to St. Edwards Obedience Show in Chislehurst today! It was Gill Brett that was our judge... It is always difficult to do well under a judge that you know... I didn't think Jesse worked particularly well, the heelwork was a bit lagging... But of course, it is more than likely that it was me and Gill said, I was walking extremely slow... His recall was fine as was his retrieve, though he did a slightly crooked present in the retrieve.
But Jesse scraped still into the cards and we came 6th in Beginners! So we got yet another rosette!
It was also a little bit of luck as the other handler/dog that had the same score went home so there was no run-off...
Well done, Jesse James! Yet again, a little star!

Jesse gets 4th in Beginners
Today, we went to Ditton Obedience Show! I didn't work Pre-Beginners (it would not have felt right if he had been placed, it would have felt as if I had taken someone's place away as he has already won out of Pre-Beginners), so concentrated fully on Beginners!
And Jesse did good - we came 4th! His heelwork wasn't a 100% (slightly wide, his shoulder didn't touch my leg), the recall and retrieve presents were slightly crooked, but other than that, it was great. There were over 40 dogs in that class!
So we got another beautiful rosette.
PS. Jesse's paw seems fine again and all heeled up.

Grass seed in paw
Monday evening, when I came home from work, I noticed that Jesse kept worrying his left front paw. I went and had a look... I saw a mat that I thought I overlooked and thought that may be the mat was pulling his skin and started cutting it off.
But it wasn't the mat that bothered him... I only went and found a grass seed digging it's way into his skin. Luckily, the tail end was still on the surface and I managed to pull it out entirely! Jesse was instantly a lot happier. I desinfected the wound and also applied tea tree cream.
There is still a little bit of a swelling next to the entrance hole... I am watching it very closely (just in case there is another bit stuck in there) and if I feel it is not healing, he is straight off to the vet's.
Jesse has never had any grass seed problems up to recently, when I pulled one out of his eye (which left him none the worse for wear other than two slight scratches on his eye) and now this one in his paws. There seem to be more grass seeds floating around this year than ever! And we can't really avoid them as they are even on the pavements...
I have kept an eye on the paw and keep applying tea tree cream and so far, it looks ok. I will also give him homeopathic silicea to help expel anything else that's left in the paw.

That is a really nice report eventhough my surname got a bit changed... LOL Jesse was indeed a star!
There were by the way 57!!! entries. I didn't really there were that many... that makes Jesse's win even more significant.
And here is the judge's report for Beginners by Sandra Cobbold:

Jesse won out of Pre-Beginners today
It was a very hot day today, but Jesse and I arrived at Northwest Kent Obedience Show in Culverstone nice and early.
We first worked Beginners, where things didn't go as well as I hoped, amongst other things a very crooked present...
Then we did the Pre-Beginners Stays... no problem! Jesse did them fine despite the heat.
Right after, we worked Pre-Beginners and Jesse did a smashing round. I was so pleased. We were in the lead from then on.
The Beginners Stays were no problem either, luckily the sun was behind clowds then, so it wasn't quite as hot.
Well, I was totally surprised when Jesse came 5th in Beginners! We got a lovely rosette!
And what's more... we stayed in the lead in Pre-Beginners to the very end and JESSE WON! I am over the moon. Only his third show and he wins out of Pre-Beginners... what a result! My little Jesse is a star.
We first worked Beginners, where things didn't go as well as I hoped, amongst other things a very crooked present...
Then we did the Pre-Beginners Stays... no problem! Jesse did them fine despite the heat.
Right after, we worked Pre-Beginners and Jesse did a smashing round. I was so pleased. We were in the lead from then on.
The Beginners Stays were no problem either, luckily the sun was behind clowds then, so it wasn't quite as hot.
Well, I was totally surprised when Jesse came 5th in Beginners! We got a lovely rosette!

Obedience Show, SEDTS, 19th July
On Saturday, we had our own obedience show and I was there all day to help. I took Jesse with me also as he was entered.
It was a nice day and Jesse did a nice Pre-Beginners round. However, he messed the recall up and went straight past me for a couple of feet, then came back into the present. How strange... that cost me enough to stop us from being placed. Never mind, the judge was over the moon with Jesse and thanked me several times for bringing such a fantastic dog to the show!
Re Jesse's skin: so far, so good. He has been off antibiotics for nearly three weeks now and his skin is great. He scratches very occasionally, but nothing much above normal really! The new diet seems to work, though he still throws up occasionally if he gets hold of something that he shouldn't or - if I try new treats to see how he gest on with them.

Antibiotics finished
A week ago, we finally finished the last of the antibiotics (40 days). Jesse's skin looks fine. He'd been itching a bit again over the last couple of weeks, but I think I have pinned it down to a herbal tincture I gave him for fleas. Since I have stopped that a few days ago, the itching is almost totally gone again.

Jesse's skin finally clearing up
For the last 2 weeks, Jesse has now been on the new food NATURE'S HARVEST Ocean Fish and Rice. We have also stopped all treats other than fishy ones. And finally, his sores are all healed up and the itching has stopped. He is still on antibiotics (another 2 weeks to go), but it seems that I have finally found a food that he can tolerate with good digestion (he is getting pro- and pre-biotics at the moment too due to the antibiotics) and clear skin! I am really glad we seem to make progress here!
I find that Jesse's coat is getting more cottony now which I think is due to the castration (it's 4 months now since), but it could also be down to the food, allergies etc. So the next few months will show.

Thankfully the weather today was a whole lot better than yesterday, and more importantly I remembered to bring cold weather clothing!! Thanks to Wendy for her sympathetic stewarding and your company, which is always a pleasure. Thanks also to Liz for scoreboarding, much appreciated.
Only about 2 dogs didn’t book in today (29 entries), and we weren’t kept waiting once, so thanks to the competitors.

Jesse's 1st Obedience Show
Dylan, Jesse and I went to Culverstone Obedience Show today... Jesse had running order 6. He did a really nice round and also did his stays. He got 2nd Place! Wow, what an achievement for a 1st show. I am so proud of him!

Test results, part 2 (food allergies)
Right, yesterday we finally got the food allergy test results back - and they are very surprising... (0 lowest and 5 highest score)

So the biggest problem are - yet again - meat proteins and milk... Great! Just what we needed... another almost vegetarian dog in the family... ha ha. Never mind, at least we have got something to go on now and can hopefully sort this issue once and for all.
I shall try the NatureDiet Fish variety and see how Jesse gets on with that!

Test results, part 1 (environmental allergies)
Yesterday, Paul called me with the first part of the test results. Jesse shows level 1 allergies to:
Meadown Grass (orchard)
Blue Grass (cocksfoot)
Perennial Rye
Sweet Vernal
Timothy Grass
Nettle
Mites - A.Siro, D.farinac and D.pteronyssinus
We will get the second part of the results (food) hopefully by the end of the week.
I have give Jesse the NatureDiet Chicken variety for a couple of days, and he's started itching quite badly again. So I have put him straight back on Lamb last night and I hope that'll do the trick.

Skin getting better
After changing Jesse back to NatureDiet, he has stopped throwing up alltogether! So it was the foods... His poos are fine for now, but sometimes very slightly mucousy, so I will try him on the Chicken NatureDiet rather than Lamb, which he is having now. Even when he gets various treats now, he doesn't throw up - so I am happy with that.
His skin also seems to be improving. The sores are healing and I couldn't find any new ones. He is also less itchy. He will be getting another Malaseb bath tonight to speed the process up.
Mark hasn't received the allergy tests back yet, hopefully they will by tomorrow, otherwise it'll have to be the week after.

Food changed again
As Jesse was by now throwing up again at least once and sometimes several times a day, I switched him back to NatureDiet... and bingo, no throwing up anymore, though his poos are slightly mucousy again, but that's the lesser or many evils now. He also seems less itchy and scratchy too!

Tests done
I took Jesse to see Paul yesterday to have the allergy testing done. It all went fine, Paul got the amount of blood he needed. We'll see what comes of this... If we are none the wiser, then Paul will refer us to a good dermatologist.

Jesse is having allergy tests
I have finally decided to have Jesse tested for allergies. I don't know anymore what food to feed as he seems to react to them all in different ways. So he is booked in tomorrow morning to have blood taken and probably antibiotics for the sores on his tummy. Hopefully we will finally get to the bottom of this.

We drove to West Wales on Saturday, 19th April. It was a smooth ride, the dogs were fine and we arrived at around 3.30 pm.

Ignoring dogs
It's the first time today that I saw Jesse ignore another dog. We cross path with Dexter, the staffie, and Jesse would always have run up to him. But today he was busy with sniffing things and didn't even bother to go and say hello. He is so much easier now around other dogs...

Jesse and other dogs
It is the first time this morning that I noticed that Jesse is easier to recall from other dogs... and doesn't go as far anymore to meet them. So neutering has made a huge impact in this area too. And yet again, he hasn't been humping any dogs at all! Fab!

First obedience competition
Jesse, Flash and I went to the yearly match against Culverston. Last year, Flash won 1st place in primary... and he did it again this year. WELL DONE, beautiful boy.
For Jesse however it was the very first time in an obedience ring... and he did well. The heelwork was quite dodgy to start off with (though no tight lead), the last half was quite nice apparently! I was pleased wit that. Recall was fine until he took a few commands to get him into a present... He did a nice finish though.
The sit and down stay were perfect, eventhough I had to do them with Jesse and Flash together next to each other. And even when the dog next to Jesse got up, they stayed put.
Jesse came third and I was more than happy with his performance as it was the very first time he was in the obedience ring. Way to go, little boy.

Playing, not humping
This morning is the first time that I saw Jesse wanting to play with a dog rather than hump him. We met Bob, an old dog that we meet most mornings. Usually Jesse wants to hump him and keeps running after him. I had Jesse on the lead when approaching him and Jesse started play bowing! So he has started to enjoy meeting other dogs rather than just have sex on his mind!
Last night I also realised that he is not trying to hump me anymore at all now!

Stitches out and food change
Went to see Mark today to take Jesse's stitches out. All was well and although Jesse wasn't impressed at all when I turned him upside down (and Mark had to call a nurse as well to hold his back legs apart), he was fine as soon as he was back on his four feet... LOL It's all healed up well.
He already seems to be less intensive with other dogs as well when he meets them and rarely licks our other dogs' privates now. So it seems to be working.

I am not sure whether it is that food or not though or whether it was something else he was given and/or the worming tablets. So I will continue with this food for a couple of months to see how it goes. Jesse seems doing well on it. He also loves the venison treats I have bought them.

Home check
I took Jesse on a home check with me yesterday, 24th, and he behaved impeccably! What a clever boy.
He hasn't been out for a walk yet, I was going to take him tomorrow for the first time after the op, but it's pretty wet, so I might wait another day!
The wound is fine, hardly any bruising (thanks to arnica). He does wear the buster collar when he is not supervised as he does lick, but other than that, he is very good.
He already sniffs the other dogs privates a lot less, so it seems to have an effect already.
We also gave them bones tonight for some dental care... All went well until Jesse walked away from his bone, Dylan got too close and Jesse went for him (guarding from a distance). Luckily I was right there and could stop them before Jesse got to Dylan... So I took the bone up immediately (which I should have done in the first place). This is the only situation where we really have to watch them as they are all bone/chew guarders and although know the rules and don't go and pinch stuff (and therefore don't cause any problems), there are some situations where they will still go for each other - if they think that the other is taking an interest... even if they have finished with the bone! Naughty pups.
It doesn't worry me though as I know exactely what it is and they never get bones unsupervised. So it really isn't a problem.

Jesse is doing fine and a visit to my classes
Jesse is doing fine after the op. I did put the buster collar on him at night as he does nibble if not watched carefully... Same today, if I can't watch him, I put the buster collar on.
This morning, I took him to training class with me... not a particularly good move as he was quite distractive to the other dogs, but I didn't want to leave him at home unsupervised (Cornel was still in bed). He was quite aggressive, particularly to the puppies, which I knew he would be. It is the only place where he is like that... On walks he is fine and does not cause any problem, particularly off lead. On lead, he can be a bit funny - but I think that's mainly learnt behaviour copied from Dylan.
Once the hormones have worn off in a few weeks and I know that they don't influence his behaviour majorly anymore, then I will start with lots of work with him to get him fully back on track.

Jesse is neutered
Today, Jesse went in to be neutered. I was a nervous wreck until I knew that all had gone well. I picked him up at 2 pm. He was still very sleepy and only since about 11 pm, he is practically back to normal.
He had his dinner, which he ate ok. I have also got his new food (Exclusion Venison and Potato), so we'll see how we get on with that.
I am so glad that the neutering business is over now. I was so worried about it!

College
From 11th to 14th February (leaving on 10th) we went to college with Dylan, Flash and Jesse with us. They loved the Travelodge hotel and seemed much happier and settled than in Arras Farmhouse B&B... Not sure why.
There were loads of wild bunnies around the service station at night and I am sure that Flash and Dylan thought they were in heaven... LOL. Of course, they weren't allowed to chase and stayed on lead. Jesse didn't really bother with them as the only thing he chases is birds really.
22nd February - this Friday - it's Jesse's time to get neutered... I am not looking forward to this. He has actually calmed down quite a bit again re other dogs and humping, but it still needs to be done.

Time to be neutered
I have booked Jesse in to be neutered on Friday, 22nd February! It is the first Friday that is suitable for both me and the vet.
It is high time that he gets done as he is now leaning towards aggressive with some male dogs and gets well over excited with the girls. Last night he marked twice in the training hall...

Neutering and Training
I have for the first time started to seriously consider neutering Jesse... in fact, I have over the last few days decided for good that he will be neutered. His behaviour is getting to a point where he stresses himself out around bitches and male dogs and it stresses me out. Over the last few days, he has also started to try to hump Flash frequently... unfortunately Flash doesn't tell him off! So I think it is time.
Yesterday, I took the three boys for a walk and we met a couple of dogs. They were off lead to start off with, so I let Flash and Jesse approach and called Dylan back. Both Flash and Jesse were fine with the dogs, and I was holding on to Dylan's harness. Dylan was interested, so I let him approach one of the dogs (which was put on the lead in the meantime) and Dylan suddenly snapped at it! And as he did that, Jesse went for the other dog that he was previously sniffing without any problems. So I had to stop both, appologised to the other owner and moved on.
This is the sort of thing that I think Jesse will hopefully be a lot less intense about once he is neutered. Although he is not an aggressive dog at all and will not generally initiate a fight, he is much more intense with other dogs than I would like - and I feel that is mainly hormone related. So hopefully, neutering will make him a bit more relaxed about this sort of thing. (Though I fully understand as well that it is Jesse's nature not to back down and on occasions go over the top - he has never been good at controlling his temper once he gets going...).
